DENTAL INSURANCE

Dental Insurance

Purchasing a dental insurance plan is generally considered to be a good idea for most individuals and family. Not only does dental insurance help to offset the cost of regular, bi-annual visits to your dentist’s office, dental insurance can also protect you from financial losses due to accidents or dental emergencies. For individuals whose teeth are healthy and who don’t need to visit a dentist more than twice a year for a regular cleaning and checkup, dental insurance may seem a bit expensive, as the premiums may amount to more than the cost of the regular visits.

Why Purchase Dental Insurance?

For individuals who have experienced frequent dental issues, purchasing a dental insurance plan or joining a dental discount program can be a very good idea. The costs of root canal surgery, dental repair, and dental emergencies can be quite expensive, and dental insurance can help offset these costs, making them more affordable. Purchasing a quality dental insurance plan can help ensure that you are able to receive the dental care you need as soon as possible, leading to better oral health.

Types of Dental Insurance Coverage

There are a number of dental coverage types available who wish to purchase insurance:

Dental indemnity plans – these plans resemble traditional medical insurance plans where a percentage of your dental care costs are covered by paying a monthly fee or insurance premium. Most dental indemnity plans cover 100 percent of preventive care services, 80 percent of dental restoration procedures, and 50 percent of major dental treatments such as orthodontics

Dental Preferred Provider Plans – These plans typically carry a cost of less than $50 per month, and provide you with deeply discounted rates on dental procedures when you choose a dentist who operates within the company’s specified network. A few services, such as emergency repairs may also be offered outside the network. This type of plan is regulated by state insurance departments.

HMO Dental Insurance – This type of dental insurance plan operates in the same way as regular Health Maintenance Organization medical insurance plans. They typically cost between $20 and $40 a month and provide excellent coverage. Patients must choose a dentist who is listed within the HMO network, while procedures performed outside this network will come with a significantly higher cost or must be paid out of pocket.

Dental Discount Plans – A dental discount plan operates in the same way most prescription discount programs do. This type of plan features a very low cost, often paid once yearly. While again network based, they often offer a greater choice. These types of plans will not provide you with costs as low as typical insurance coverage, but will provide you with a deep discount on procedures performed within the specified network of care providers. This is an excellent option for people who are generally in good oral health, but need discounted coverage in the case of emergencies.
