You may be brushing your teeth after every meal, flossing twice a day, and using a mouth rinse once a day. However, they’re not enough to eliminate the harmful bacteria from your teeth and mouth. A professional cleaning at least twice a year will remove plaque and build-up.

Your dentist can also look into your mouth and find early signs of disease. Depending on your oral health, you may only need to visit your dentist’s office twice a year. If you have gum disease or other mouth disorders, you may need to see your dentist more often.

To further protect your teeth from cavities and decay, you may ask your dentist about dental sealant. It’s a thin, plastic coating that is placed on your teeth’s chewing surfaces to protect them from plaque.

When you follow these tips, you can avoid plaque buildup and prevent tooth decay. If you failed to remove plaque from your teeth, you’d end up suffering from gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss.
