If dental issues such as improperly spaced or discolored teeth are keeping you from showing off your smile, you may want to ask one of our cosmetic dentistry professionals about dental bonding. Cosmetic bonding is a very common cosmetic dentistry procedure that can be used to remedy a number of dental issues. In fact, you’ve probably received cosmetic bonding at some point without even being aware of it. While the most common form of dental bonding is adhesive bonding, used to attach a dental restoration such as a crown, dental bridge or porcelain veneer, direct composite bonding can be used to correct a number of other dental health issues.
Direct Composite Bonding
In direct composite bonding, a naturally tooth-colored resin is applied to your teeth in order to perform a number of dental restorations. This process can usually be completed in a single visit lasting between 30 minutes to an hour, though more complicated treatments may require additional visits. Unlike other dental restorations, there is no need to wait for a laboratory restoration to be created; your dentist will mix the dental resin and will apply it here in our office.
Advantages of dental bonding
Dental bonding can be used to perform a number of dental restorations including:
- Filling cavities
- Treating tooth discoloration
- Repairing cracks or chips in the teeth
- Closing gaps between teeth
- Building up worn teeth
In addition to these very common procedures, dental bonding can also be used to protect your tooth roots if you are suffering from receding gums. Bonding is often used as an alternative to more extensive (and expensive) dental restorations because it does not require the removal of any of your healthy tooth enamel. Many dentists prefer bonding because there is no need for temporary restorations. There is also no need to wait for a dental laboratory to create your custom restorations; your dental work can usually be completed in a single visit.
How long will cosmetic bonding take?
Depending on the specific issue being addressed, a dental bonding appointment generally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes per tooth. We will begin by cleaning your teeth and then roughening your tooth’s surface. Then we apply a special liquid that will allow the restoration to adhere to your tooth. Unlike other dental restorations, this process requires very little of your healthy tooth enamel to be removed; far less than a dental crown or veneer. Once your tooth is properly prepared, the resin will be applied to the tooth and shaped. A special ultraviolet light will then be used to quickly harden the resin. At this point, we will further shape and remove any excess. Finally, the resin will be polished so that it looks exactly like your other natural teeth.
How long will cosmetic bonding last?
If cared for properly, your dental bonding can last for up to 10 years. It is important that you continue to visit our office annually for checkups so that our dentist can check to make sure your bonding doesn’t require any repairs or touch-ups. Following an oral hygiene regimen of brushing twice and flossing once per day will help to ensure that your dental bonding lasts as long as possible.
