Dental crowns are essentially ‘caps’ that cover a damaged tooth. Unlike dentures, crowns are permanently cemented to your existing teeth or implants. Crowns are used as aesthetic enhancers as well as for strengthening an existing damaged tooth. Crowns can be of porcelain, ceramic, or even gold, metallic alloys or acrylic. Alloys are stronger than porcelain.
Dental crowns are used for a number of reasons including:
- Restore a broken tooth
- Replace a large filling
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover and protect a tooth that has had a root canal
At Advanced Dental Care of Austin, we can complete your crown in a same-day appointment thanks to the advancements in dental technology. This process is very simple. We utilize a 3D intra-oral camera to obtain your digital impression, after which your tooth will be prepared to have the crown fitted. During a waiting period you can sit back and relax, while we work with the Cerec machine to design your crown using digital images so you can enjoy a precise, natural and very comfortable fit. When that process is complete, we will mill the crown here in our office, cement it permanently and you will be on your way.
