Implants

Dental implants can restore aesthetics and function if a tooth is extracted or missing. A titanium screw called an implant is placed into the jawbone where the tooth root used to be, then allowed to integrate with the bone. After a period of healing, the implant is then attached with an abutment (connector) to the replacement tooth (called a crown). Some people want to replace missing teeth soon after they are extracted, others wait and years later they can still be replaced with implants. Also, people who wear loose dentures can gain stability by connecting a denture to implant attachments.

Implants can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth depending on your goals. Schedule your free implant consultation today to see if you are a candidate for implants.

There are several benefits to dental implants, including:

  • Cosmetic, to fix any problems with your natural teeth
  • Long-lasting and cost-effective solution
  • Supports the natural shape of your face and smile
  • Enjoy your favorite foods
  • Protect your healthy teeth

Some common terminology for the dental implant process:

  • Abutment: a connector placed on top of the dental implant, to connect to the replacement tooth or teeth
  • Crown: a custom replacement tooth created to match your natural teeth

There are two main types of implants:

  • Endosteal implants: surgically implanted into the jawbone, and requires two separate procedures. The first is to place the implant into the jawbone, and to connect a post to the original implant. Second, an artificial tooth is attached to the post.
  • Subperiosteal implants: a metal frame is fitted into the jawbone below the gumline. As the gum gradually heals, it becomes affixed to the jawbone. The posts protrude from the gums and artificial teeth are mounted to these posts.
